Sager NP8957 – Thin & Light Gaming Laptop Review [Updated for 2020]

One of the Best Thin Gaming Laptops for 2020

One of the latest gaming laptops from Sager, the NP8957, is something awesome. Having that lot of power and incredible specs for around $1,500 is something that gamers might only have dreamed of a few years ago.

Sager is one of those relatively new brands which compared to some of the staple brands like Alienware and TUK, but they are developing high-quality machines for gaming in particular.

No other gaming laptop, for the cost, beats this. At this price point, this laptop is just LOADED.

When you’re looking at a price range of about $1,500, the Sager NP8957 can be the one for you

Design

The Sager NP8957 the NP8957 Sager has an elegant appearance, but if you’re looking for anything other than a gaming machine, it may come off bulky. The laptop’s cover has a good looking “wing” and the sager logo flashing when the screen is lit.

The laptop itself is incredibly thin, arriving at a width of just 0.78 inches.

The bezel all over the edges of the panel is one of the downsides of this device. Particularly for a laptop in 2020, it is very high. It isn’t something to reduce the ranking necessarily, but if you’re still looking for a super sleek laptop, it’s something to keep in mind.
Display

The matte glass, which is a big bonus, is accessible from all angles and under most lighting conditions. However, because of this Matte finish, you can see fingerprints showing up after a lot of use. I suppose you’ve got to take the good with the bad.

The big angle of view refresh rate 144HZ. This display of 1920x 1080 Matte provides a comprehensive and clear quality image. The display has slight blurs and ghosting to it.

The screen is very bright, and although it has not the highest refresh rate, it looks great when you’re editing video and playing games, particularly at this price point.

Processor

The Sager comes with the Intel Core i7-9750H-6 Core Processor of the Intel 9th Generation EPIC. The thing is a beast.

Every gaming laptop requires a processor that is highly efficient and robust enough not to cause gaming failures. The Intel Core i7-9750H makes this laptop a great choice.

To prevent your laptop from overheating a processor like this needs a performance cooling system, and here the Sager does not disappoint. This machine is certainly cool down by the fans, and the plus side about this laptop is that you can still go find a cooling pad for it.

Graphics Card

The Sager NP8957  comes with 8 GB GDDR6 (Max-Q design) with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070. I’m just pleasantly surprised that with $1,500 you’ll get gaming laptop included graphic card. It is very impressive given everything else that comes with this unit.

Real-Time Ray-Tracing (RTX) produces an interactive environment that makes games look very realistic and authentic. RTX creates shadows, reflections, and lighting.

The Max-Q architecture was installed in thinner laptops for power efficiency and was designed to prolong the battery life. While gaming machines have a notoriously bad battery life as a whole, this does not encourage you to unplug your laptop for hours and hours.

Counterstrike Global Offensive and Tomb Raider are two of the most challenging games on laptops and can be heavily taxed. While running on 1080p (not 4k), the Sager performs well with both and shows limited ghosting, and has a screen resolution of about 65 frames per second.

Ports & Connectivity

The Sager NP8957 is loaded with ports.

  • 1 HDMI 2.0 output Port (with HDCP)
  • 1 Mini DisplayPort 1.3 output Port,
  • 1 DisplayPort 1.3 over USB 3.1 Gen 2 port (Type C)
  • 1 USB 3.1 Gen 2 port (Type C)
  • 2 USB 3.0 Ports (1 x powered USB port, AC/DC)
  • 1 2-in-1 Audio Jack (Microphone / S/PDIF Optical output)
  • 1 2-in-1 Audio Jack (Headphone / Microphone)
  • 1 RJ-45 LAN (10/100/1000Mbps); Bluetooth V5.0 + LE

It is certainly good to have an actual audio jack while gaming and using different types of headphones. Occasionally Bluetooth just doesn’t cut it.

If you are keen to use several displays (and why wouldn’t you be?!), you can also use up to 3 additional monitors with this device.

One thing to remember here is the port which is in an uncomfortable position for the power jack. When you push the cord backward it ends up in front of the fans, when you push it forward you cut it into the port region of the HDMI panel. Not a deal-breaker, but something that you should remember.

Battery Life

On this Sager, battery life is a touchy issue. However, whether you’re playing games, editing videos, or programming, it’s impossible that you’re anywhere without a source of power.

But if you’re in a college class and want efficiency without external power, this may not be your device. While simple use will get you about 3-4 hours without charging, if you do anything intense like video editing or gaming, you’ll probably get only around 1-1,5 hours without a plug-in.

Keyboard & Touchpad

On the Sager NP8957, the keyboard just operates. It feels awesome to switch about quickly and, when typing fast, it is remarkably calm. When in use, the keys are not mushy and provide a better click.

The keys that are backlit look amazing and the colors could be modified to match your style and preferences. The keyboard can be modified in 3 zones or all 3 are set to the same color.

Always included is a number pad, though it feels a little flimsy it is a nice feature to have. Since there are no built-in keys on the touchpad so when you switch around the screen rapidly, you didn’t easily reach them.

Touchpad does have Windows Accuracy Operators so you can use all the 10 shortcuts you want from the windows.

Who the Sager NP8957 is best for

The Sager NP8957 has a lot of excellent features but a lot of disadvantages too. You may want to look elsewhere if you are a college student or move a lot and need long battery life.

Aside from battery life, this computer is excellent for:

  • Video editing – Premiere Pro and other programs work well with the monitor and graphics card
  • Photo editing with the likes of Photoshop and Lightroom
  • The beginner of advanced gamers – the majority of high-required games on this device should run great
  • Developers and programmers Who require efficient Graphics and Processors
  • Anyone who wants a good device at a great price
