Acer Predator Helios 300 Review: Worth It?

Acer is continuing to delight with this gaming laptop under $1,500. For a gaming laptop of this price, the specification and output are top-notch.

Although it was first released in 2017 (with some modifications made in 2019), this laptop still ranks on the list of Amazon bestsellers — at # 5 at present.

Build & Design

The G3-571-77QK design is very impressive and elegant. You can tell this machine is a high-quality construction from the very first touch. Typical gaming accents don’t go overboard either.

The laptop’s external looks identical to the previous edition, with a few slight improvements that I think, are truly upgrades. The top, like the keyboard plate, is black aluminum, the metal.

It comes with a 1920 x 1080 Full HD LED-backlit IPS widescreen display. The screen’s color quality isn’t perfect and looks a bit dim. You can also upgrade to the 17 inches with some extra hardware for a little more cost.

This version works with Acer True Harmony Sound system Technology and 2 Built-in Stereo Speaker. These are attractive decent speakers with great sound, but this may not be the one for you if you’re looking for a professional, studio-quality sound.

The cooling fans are extremely quiet and do an excellent job of keeping this device from getting too hot with typical use, which isn’t something you can say in the same category for other laptops. Even though it becomes quite hot and a bit loud if you operate a lot of programs or a high-quality game as is very common with gaming laptops.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 weighs in at 5.95 pounds and comes with an integrated camera, a High Dynamic Range (HDR) 1280 x 720 HD webcam. It comes in at a thickness of 1.1inch

Keyboard & Touchpad

The Predator Helios 300  comes with an MS Accuracy backlit keyboard with a numeric keypad that is not always typical of a 15-inch laptop. Nonetheless, there’s a bit jammed in the numeric keypad and those keys are pretty tiny.

The WASD keys come with a red outline and people can know that you are a gamer as soon as you open up that bad boy. The remainder of the keyboard is white backlit and is either on or off, with this laptop, there is no dimming option.

To make gaming easy to use it comes with four dedicated macro keys.

The trackpad for gamers is relatively robust and very practical.

Connectivity & Ports

The Acer Predator Helios 300 comes with the following ports:

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 USD 3.1 (Type C) port but not Thunderbolt
  • 1 HDMI 2.0 Port with HDCP Support
  • Secure Digital (SD) card reader slot
  • 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN (RJ-45 port)

This laptop comes with 802.11ac WiFi wireless networking with 2×2 MIMO technology (2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band). This also provides compatibility with Bluetooth 4.0.

Incorporate the new Intel Core i7 processor of the 7th generation which is very common in most gaming laptops.

Intel Core i7, 7th Generation 2.8GHz Processor with Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.8GHz, 16 GB DDR4 Ram 2400MHz, 256 GB SSD. No PCIe, because this edition is more budget-oriented.

The Predator comes with an impressive NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM memory, as you normally get a 1050 model or less.

A 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD and 1 TB 5400 HDD (2.5′′) comes in the Predator Helios 300.

Although the included storage isn’t great, upgrading it yourself is quite fast. There are plenty of online videos and tutorials that will help you get this completed soon hopefully.

Battery Life

This battery comes with a Li-ion 4-cell power supply (3220 mAh) which has a battery life of 6-7 hours. This is super interesting considering that most gaming laptops with decent graphics have around 3-4 hours of battery life before plugging in.

That’s extremely frustrating, but it’s very normal when it comes to the “small and sleek” gaming laptops you’ll find on the market today. And it’s almost to be assumed when you acquire this portable stuff.

Here’s a short video about this gaming laptop unboxing:

Acer Predator Helios 300, the price tag that comes with it is very shocking, given what you’ll get the Acer Predator Helios 300. Although you need to modify the memory capacity, this is an excellent choice for a solid gaming laptop for about $1,200 (the price at the time of writing).
